GAYLIENATION (gay-lee-un-nay-shun) noun
  1. The sense of being an outlier as a result of one's sexual orientation <panic frequently accompanies the gaylienation I feel upon being asked to attend a bridal shower>
  2. The act of being separated from a group, often forcibly, due to one's sexual orientation <elementary school amounts to several years of galienation, followed by algebra>

OH, like, EVERYTIME one of my college friends gets engaged and then calls me up and wants to discuss veil lengths? And while I'm happy for them, I wonder what in GOD'S name gave them any sliver of expectation that I would want to discuss the lengths of various wedding veils.

Loved the humor in this and then it really made me think.
Thank you for providing a word that describes something I've felt for a very long time! (I even blogged about it, lol).

I experienced a similar sort of panic when asked to attend a baby shower. I seem to recall freaking out in the local Target looking for a present. I also may have suggested that the 3D imaging of the baby was not adorable and looked like an alien. ... um.

Haha! LOL at the alien thing. That totally sounds like something I'd do, Rebecca. I've also done things like wrapped a baby shower gift in a plain paper bag because I forgot to get wrapping paper and it was all I had in the car when I pulled up outside the shower and thought, "Uh-oh... I didn't wrap the gift." Ah, gaylienation...

Definitely a good one. Finally, a word for that universal feeling of not quite like all the rest. Food for thought...gaylienation by other 'mo's? I know I've felt it. Love to know your thought, Butch Wonder!

I think what I am trying to illuminate here is the (increasing) judgement and isolation I have witnessed queer people passing on other queer people. For instance, gay men discriminating against and entertaining biases towards gay women and vise versa. Or the general divide between the trans and gay community...

It seemed to me like gaylienation is something that, as a whole, we have suffered at the hands of a hetero-normative society. Therefore, why would we want to extend that judgement and hostility into and between our community?
