Shout-out to Some Awesome Blogs

10/16/2012

As you've probably noticed, I list a bunch of my favorite blogs in the right-hand column--you should definitely check them all out(!).  I try to keep it fresh, so I delete blogs that seem inactive (i.e., haven't posted in 2012).

I'm grateful to my fellow bloggers, who always have something interesting to say, keep me on my toes, and comment thoughtfully on BW.  I don't know if these folks know how religiously I read them, but I do(!).  And I wanted to highlight some of my favorite posts from the past couple of months:

  • Mainely Butch writes about the things she loves most about being visibly butch...  and the things she finds the most awkward.  My experiences are a little different from hers (though there's certainly some overlap), and I loved reading her lists.
  • Butch on Tap gives lots of advice for staying sane through a breakup.  I think all of it is terrific, except for the part about avoiding Ben & Jerry's, which seems to me a little rash.
  • Butchtastic Kyle writes a terrifically interesting account of coming out to his parents (sort of accidentally) in high school.
  • Neutrois Nonsense shares advice about things to do before, during, and after top surgery.  (No, I have no interest in getting top surgery, but a friend of mine is planning on it.)  She said it was super helpful, so I thought you all might like it, too.  (It can also help you help a friend.)
  • Bren of Diffuse 5 writes a great post on breast-binding for beginners.  I prefer not to wear anything more binding than a nice sturdy sports bra, but if you want to experiment with something more, this is a must-read.
  • Can I Help You Sir sometimes posts these great catch-all "links and whatnot" entries.  They always contain interesting stuff, and this latest one is no exception.
  • DapperQ, always a fun read, has this great post that illustrates some basic how-tos, like tying a bow tie, with amusing old-timey pictures.
  • mx.punk has this interesting, thoughtful post on "Internet pansexuals," and takes issue with the statement, "Love shouldn't be based on something as trivial as gender."

What else have you been reading online lately?

I've been reading effingdykes at effingdykes.blogspot.com. While not specifically butch, she did a great post on lesbian body image.

It makes me so sad to see those posts from women who can't fully love their body. I'm proud of beautiful masculine womanly body, including my breasts. I have nothing to hide or be ashamed of. I am so thankful to have been born a woman, and I wish that Butches wouldn't feel that they need to change themselves, but take pride in their amazing womanhood.

Yo, I respectfully disagree! Here are a couple of thoughts:

(1) Yay for you and me for being happy with our bodies. But not everyone is happy with theirs, or feels comfortable in theirs. Why should we expect everyone to feel the same way?

(2) "Butch" and "trans" are different, albeit overlapping, identities. Just because someone who was born with the bits we think of as lady bits, that doesn't mean he or she *feels* like a woman. And if you don't feel like the sex/gender you're assigned at birth is really "yours," why should you accept it? I dunno. To me, asking people not to be trans is like asking me not to be a dyke, or asking me to like wearing dresses or something. Why should I? That's not who I am.

(3) Lots of butches were happy to be born as women, and happily identify as such. More thoughts on the tension between butch and trans identity: see #5 on this post: http://www.butchwonders.com/1/post/2011/08/post-title-click-and-type-to-edit5.html.

I totally agree if your a Trans guy great for you, but then you're not Butch. As Butches are females, and as females I believe that we should be proud of our bodies. You're welcome to disagree, it's just my opinion. Which as we all know are just feelings based on our realities. I just hate seeing young Butches feel like they need to look just like a man to be beautiful. You can be masculine and have a female body, that's the beauty. If you feel like you were born in a different body that's a whole other ball of wax.

"I just hate seeing young Butches feel like they need to look just like a man to be beautiful."

I know people who bind who are not men. They don't feel like they *need* to *look like* anything to be beautiful. They feel attractive and like their authentic selves when they bind. And their self comfort level shows.

I agree with you that it's sad for anybody to feel they *have* to look a certain way. I also think it's sad when people feel like they can't be true to themselves for fear of being judged by others in the LGBTQ community.

Self-policing is absurd, plain and simple. Defining what butch means for someone else is just not your place. I identify as butch: I love my breasts and I also bind them, and I certainly have never (and will never) aim to be a man. That said, I don't identify as a woman, either, and there is never going to be a time in my life where I believe my definition is universal.

I'm not sure when/why there has been such push-back over encompassing all MOC people into a LOVING and SAFE community. Haven't you felt marginalized enough already? Perhaps instead of pushing judgement onto the young folks coming up and teaching them to hate, we can welcome them, however they express themselves, and recognize them for who they are.

P.S.: Binding and packing are not always a show of dysphoria with biological sex or self-hate. Sometimes, people just REALLY want to pee standing up.

I, too, personally define "butch" as female. Or at least, I used to. Now I'm not so sure. Why shouldn't anyone be able to claim a butch identity, as long as they don't deny mine?

Honored to be in your list of "regulars" - you certainly are in mine. I also try to keep a good mix of perspectives in my list, so I don't get blinded by my own all the time. (Not to mention I already read some of the other shouted to blogs, which means they must be good!)

Thanks for including me on this list! I'm always happy when something I write ends up resonating with someone else, even if it's a goofy set of links.

This list also gave me some new blogs to check out - thanks!

It is getting harder and harder to find decent lesbian blogs - regardless of how to choose to search - through the normal search machines, as if they purposefully push references and links down to the deepest pages, so your link list here has come as a great relief to me and I look forward to finding more fascinating stories and perspectives as a result.
