I got an interesting email from a BW reader several weeks ago. I promised him a response, and with his permission decided to share his question and my answer with the rest of you.

Dear BW,

I am a straight man ..not bi or bi-curious. I love women. I have always been attracted to tomboys but now that I'm grown I have discovered that is my preference. I turn my head faster when I see a sexy stud opposed to high heels and a dress. I also feel the conversation or potential relationship is better. I am also amazed sometimes of the perfect bodies when those baggy clothes come off. The sex is simply better.

When it comes to relationships, I don't know what to do. The stud I was interested in/having relations with... We enjoy each other's company and sex. But she has a girlfriend, obviously. So I'm confused, probably like she is. Do you think she was just using me? And if so, why? We really mesh but she definitely doesn't want anyone to know... And I promised her that. So, yes, I would love to be in a relationship with a stud... Not that I'm trying to change her. I would not mind if she had a girlfriend... As long as I was her guy. Do I sound crazy or what?

Dear Confused Carl,

You don't sound crazy. Sure, most straight guys' heads are turned by skirts and heels, but yours isn't! I bet lots of men attracted to "non-feminine" women aren't willing to say so, because they fear others' questions and judgment, or because they think it makes them less masculine (which it doesn't!). My last post talked about the difference between masculinity in women and masculinity in men. It's not weird to me that you would be attracted to one but not to the other. Masculine women are women--and they happen to be your favorite kind. So, cool.

Butchy and masculine-of-center bisexual (and even straight!) women DO exist. Some of the bi ones only date women, in part because men aren't usually attracted to them. But this doesn't mean that they wouldn't date a cis man if the right one (like you!) came along. So it might take a little extra effort on your part--for example, dating online, going to bi mixers, or letting your friends know your preference so that they can "keep an eye out" for you. But don't give up hope! A straight guy into masculine women doesn't come along every day, and the right woman will be sooo excited to meet you!

And then, of course, there's your specific situation, which is trickier. You may be right that "your" stud is confused... but she may simply be bi. I can't tell from your email whether she wants you to keep your relationship a secret because you're a man or because she is dating someone else. The fact that she is with someone else, though, and doesn't want people to know about your relationship, means that unless something changes, you two aren't going anywhere. If you're okay with being the guy "on the side," fine. But remember that unless all parties know what's going on and are okay with it, it's cheating. This fact doesn't change just because you're a guy.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I get the sense from your email that you're not exactly thrilled with the current situation. You might consider talking with her about this. I have no idea whether she's using you (as you fear) or whether she's genuinely confused. But it doesn't sound like the status quo is working for you--and if it's not, you need to find out what's going on with her. My advice would be to tell her what you've told me. Tell her you don't want her to feel pressure about her sexual orientation, and that you like being with her as a human being and need to know what you mean to her.

You write, "I would not mind if she had a girlfriend... As long as I was her guy." This statement confused me. Are you talking about a polyamorous relationship? About regular sex on the side? It kind of sounds like you'd be cool with the latter, except that's what you have right now and you don't sound totally happy about it. What do you want?

I don't want you to settle for this "on the side" business, though, if what you really want is a full-on, even monogamous, relationship with a studly woman. If this is so, know that you can get it. It might take a while to find, but it is possible, and you don't have to "settle" for what you have now if it doesn't make you happy.

I'm a fairly masculine guy that's really into butch women. It's caused me considerable confusion, frustration, consternation and questioning of my sexuality and gender over the years. I used to get all weepy watching the L-word with my lesbian pals, because I feared I would never meet a woman as hot as Shane that would be into me. This was an interesting question and an extraordinarily thoughtful and insightful answer. There are many, many men (and I am among them) who are attracted to women but aren't particularly attracted to the cultural norm of "femininity." For some that may be an esthetic choice - they are sexually attracted to butch looking women. An attraction I totally understand, and share at times. But for others the appeal is more about mindset, attitude and refusal to conform to norms.
My wife is resolutely heterosexual (yay for me!), but a feminist scholar, fierce in every way and challenges me all the time. And I wouldn't want it any other way.

She has short hair and isn't at all "girly," but she isn't butch in appearance by any stretch of imagination either. Yet a lot of people would find her "masculine" or "butch" in attitude.......which is one of the things I love most about her.

Sorry if this is off topic, but I guess what I'm saying is that when I see guys saying "I love a butch woman (of a certain body type and appearance)," it's not really that different than a guy saying "I like blonde girls with big breasts." I happen to be attracted to a more butch looking woman too, but I am equally attracted to girly looking girls who are strong and don't take any crap.

There are plenty of guys are into butch looking women, but more importantly there are plenty of men (and women) who are even more into women that refuse t listen to what our society says they should look like or act like or think like.

I'm a 30 year old black man still discovering his sexual attractions and tastes. I've always been attracted to "tomboys" and women with masculine traits (fit girls, muscles women). I'm also attracted to femininity so it can get complicated. I was looking this up on a whim, during those times when I'm feeling a bit lonely. Most of the time when I searched for studs/butch women who are into men I end up finding the very negative and judgmental end of the subject. Mostly black lesbian studs (not particularly attracted to them) pushing the narrative that if you are a man and you are attracted to them you are a closeted on the DL gay man. It was disheartening to hear and it made me not want to even consider ever approaching a masculine female because they might be like the women in the videos I watch disgusted by a straight man talking to them. My advice as a long time stud/butch enthusiast....you have to be willing to roll the dice and take a chance....the worst she can say is no.

What you say to her will be very important....choose your words carefully. One thing I have noticed about butch/ studs...they are going to play that totally lesbian roll until they feel safe and secure around you....

You have to keep in mind that most butch/stud females dont like to be feminized, esp in public. Telling her she is a sweet girl....I think thats a No No! A better rephrasing would be ...you're a really kool person and I love your swag...you are saying the same thing but it's not as blunt.

I think it's silly to cut yourself off from half of the world if you want the find love or someone to share your life with. So I tried dating a man for the first time two years ago. I thought he was generally interested in me but found out on our second date that he was just interested in hooking up after he had continuously reassured me that was not his intent. I went right back to women lol. I find that the stigma imposed on both sexes by the media and social constructs has made it practically impossible for women like me to date men. It's considered taboo and or grouped in with fetishism. I hate that, everything is all about sex and not about hearts. It's really a breath of fresh air to read all of the replies and comments here even if they are sexualized, it's nice to know that there are men that are attracted to women like me..

Maaaan where do i begin. "Studs" don't wear make-up every dam day or ever, their hair is always real, be it a short fade or some long dreads. I am a 31yo black male from Atlanta. I would have to say that i have been attracted to butch type women since i was young. One of my best and closest friends from that time was a stud. I have had several friends of this nature all through out my life and i have always found myself more attracted to them then the women that i end up dating. Like this man from the post says, the conversations are often more engaging as we often have more in common and similar interests.
Ive also have felt awkward about my attraction to them as when i have expressed my interests i was told that it was because i like men and i just havent come to terms with that yet. Mixed Orientation relationship. It is now politically correct to be supportive of everything under the sun. It's highly likely that woman isn't bisexual at all.
